Statement

Many people use social media to stay connected with friends and meet new people. Platforms like Facebook and Instagram enable us to quickly build large networks. However, despite all this online connectivity, research shows that people are feeling lonelier and more isolated than ever. This study examines how interactive media art can facilitate individuals’ reflection on their digital relationships. The authors created an artwork called Particling Night, where people recite the names of those they know, and the system transforms each name into a unique graphic star. These stars move around a central star, representing the person using the system. As users observe the stars interacting, they’re encouraged to reflect on their connections with others. The goal is to help people reflect on the meaning of relationships in a digital world, where connections can often feel shallow or overwhelming. The study found that this artistic experience helped participants think more deeply about their relationships. It suggests that media art utilizing new technologies, such as voice recognition and generative graphics, can offer powerful emotional experiences and help people thoughtfully explore their feelings.
