GuitA11y

2025

GuitA11y is a product service system that provides feedback to blind and low vision guitar learners when they practice independently. A clip-on camera is attached to the guitar and visually monitors elements that typically require sight such as wrist and hand position on behalf of the learner, delivering this information through audio feedback. Learners can also use the accompanying app to review and reflect on the feedback they receive.

Current Problem & Solution

Achieving a high quality guitar performance depends on several factors, including proper hand positioning and posture. When these elements are not maintained correctly, problems such as pain, unintended sounds, or delayed chord transitions can occur, all of which interfere with effective guitar playing. Guitar learners who are blind or have low vision (BLV) receive feedback on these aspects during lessons with a guitar tutor. However, because many of these factors rely on visual awareness, it can be difficult for them to recognize issues and apply feedback when practicing independently. To address this challenge, GuitA11y helps students apply feedback during solo practice by providing AI-based voice feedback.

Accessible Feedback

GuitA11y helps guitar students who are blind or have low vision correct posture and positioning issues even when they are practicing on their own, without a teacher. Using a clip-on camera, it captures the player’s performance and alerts them to issues they might miss because they cannot rely on visual feedback.

Personalized Guidance Creation

Because blind or low-vision guitar students may need different types of feedback depending on their instructor, GuitA11y lets teachers enter their own tips and tailor the guidance students receive. The system uses AI to analyze lesson videos and generate suggested tips, making it easy for instructors to provide personalized feedback.

Feedback Reflection

By reviewing feedback data and statistics, BLV guitar learners can reflect on their own guitar-playing habits, and a high-contrast user interface is provided for users with low vision. Instructors also have access to these statistics, enabling them to incorporate the data into their teaching.
