Red Dot Design Award 2021
The Red Dot Design Award is one of the three most influential design awards for which designers and manufacturers around the world compete in three different categories: product design; brands and communication design; and design concept.

moee is a digital service for users to document their own appreciation of artworks and enjoy other visitors’ thoughts. It provides a collection of discussions, perspectives on artworks, and shared tastes for a richer exhibition experience through collaboration with the museum.

With moee, users can leave their thoughts in forms of text and voice with “moee step icons” on the digital exhibition floor map in the mobile application. The digital floor map can be shared with other users.

These public records, together with official curatorial statements, become moee’s own digital exhibition catalogs. Through these alternative art information services, moee aims to make an enhanced exhibition experience, deriving communications and discourse.

Idea

Digital mobile transformation allows art-lovers not only to listen to curators and experts’ comments but also share their individual appreciations with others. Exhibition visitors tend to record memorable moments by their own methods, e.g. take a photo or short video for SNS postings. However, there is a limit to capture in-depth thoughts using current services.

moee allows users to easily save and look at the collection of their own notes with dedicated UX. Users could create and organize a valuable exhibition experience history and reinterpret other people’s thoughts at the same time.

Form

moee’s shoe icon is inspired by the well-known proverb, “Put yourself in others’ shoes.” Users can leave their location data to share what they appreciated and leave comments. It helps users expand their view with the artworks by marking a step on the map. Marking the impressive moments with steps allows users to express and share the various points of view in an interesting way.

Inspired by visual elements of offline exhibition catalogs, the collection of steps in moee functions as a digital pamphlet to connect records of exhibitions. moee’s visual direction consists of serif typeface, warm primary color tone, and gentle flip motions that resemble papers. It is intended to be in harmony with offline visual design identity.

Function

Users can record inspirations and ideas in forms of text and voice on the digital exhibition map, which makes it easy to track their own appreciation. In addition, they can add their steps or add opinions on other people’s steps to engage in seamless discussions.

Besides, users can also get the official curatorial notes. It helps them to get the appropriate information to share with others and better understand exhibitions and artworks. After visiting exhibitions, users can see their own paths of visit, other people’s appreciation, and the expert’s curatorial statement. It helps users easily remember and recall their exhibition visits.

Differentiation

moee aims to provide greater freedom of sharing unique interpretations by using a decentralized and fluid information model. It replaces the authority-laden practice of providing curatorial captions. There is no other platform that tracks scattered art events simultaneously from various art galleries, museums, and alternative art spaces. moee tries to connect and archive them.

moee will also help museums to gather scattered visitor feedbacks. Using moee, museums can gather and embrace reviews, feedbacks, and stories that have a greater promotional value beyond current advertisements or social media campaigns.

Impact

moee explores how art exhibitions in the contemporary society can have a greater cultural value and open up new discourses. The use of moee enhances the quality of public discussions by providing a new online agora of art for today’s digital art consumers.

With moee, art-lovers can engage in discussions on artworks and exhibitions, share various views on artworks, and exchange their tastes with others. With help of moee, individual exhibition visitors could also play an important role in the art domain.

During exhibition

moee expresses the visitor’s appreciation as a shoe icon. When a user enters the map, the step icon provides information of the user’s current position, the location of artworks and the steps left by other visitors. As such, moee helps its users expand their views.

The steps on the digital map makes it easy to track the users’ appreciation of exhibitions. They can add their opinions upon the steps left by others, resulting in a variety of communication about artworks. Further, the curator’s official explanations are also displayed on the map.

After exhibition

Users can connect and archive scattered art events simultaneously from various art galleries, museums, and alternative art spaces.

moee is inspired by visual elements of the offline exhibition catalog. The collection of steps shown on the moee digital pamphlet connect records of the exhibitions with flip motions reminiscent of paper.
