Design Seminars, 2024 Fall (Oct-Nov)

Dajung Kim | Assistant Professor at Design, UNIST

  • Title: Design for Human Autonomy in Intelligent Systems
    • With the advancement of technologies, everyday products and systems are becoming increasingly intelligent and autonomous, often acting on behalf of users. While these developments offer clear benefits, they can also undermine human control and agency in everyday decision-making. In this seminar, Dajung Kim, a newly joined assistant professor in the Department of Design, will share her research on exploring alternative forms of human-computer interaction that prioritize human autonomy in intelligent systems. Reflecting on her research and emerging technologies, she will highlight the critical role and responsibility of designers in the hyper-techno-centric world and discuss how designers can pursue human values for the responsible development of intelligent systems.

Jihyeon(Ziya) Yang | AI Product/Service Planning at LG AI Research

  • Title: AI-Driven Innovation in Bio/Pharma: Insights for STEM Designers
    • In this seminar, Jihyeon(Ziya) Yang will showcase innovative services she developed as a design graduate, integrating data and AI in the bio/pharmaceutical industry. Drawing from her industry experience, she will highlight new opportunities for Product Owners (PO) and designers in a changing landscape and discuss key problem-solving skills. This talk will inspire STEM-based design students aiming to become creative problem-solvers in the age of AI and biotechnology.

Soop | Type Experience Designer at Sandoll

  • Title: How can typefaces change the world?
    • In the context of design activism, using typefaces to represent diverse voices and create small cracks (changes) in society, we can explore the attitude and role of designers along with some examples.

Sojung Kim | Specialist at Air Solution B2C Product Planning Team, LG Electronics

  • Title: Product Planning & Design Research
    • While product planners perform different roles from designers in a product development process, the capability of design and design research can support the product planning practice. In this seminar, Sojung Kim, one of the Ph.D. alumni of UNIST Design Department, introduces her 3 years of experience as a product planner in LG Electronics. Reviewing the job of a product planner through the lens of design research, she suggests how design research skills can enhance their performance.

Jen Yoohyun Lee | Postdoctoral Fellow at Hong Kong PolyU

  • Title: How Social Media Affords the “Social”: Focusing on Group Chat Setting
    • To design is to facilitate negotiation and group decision-making. What should designers consider in the context of remote online communication? While social media platforms are widely accessible, they do not always facilitate equitable participation. This presentation aims to discuss the nuances underlying interactions facilitated by social media aBordances, specifically focusing on how information exchange occurs and how group decision-making unfolds within a group chat setting.

Jimin Rhim | (Incoming) Instructional Assistant Professor at Texas A&M University

  • Title: Designing human-centred intelligent systems with ethics in mind: Translating theories into practical implementation
    • Intelligent systems such as robots and artificial intelligence (AI) are widely applied in our society: in factories, hospitals, homes, on roads and even on our palms. The discussion about the ethics of the technologies is increasingly gaining attention as more robots, and AI systems enter our social sphere. However, developers and researchers struggle to turn theoretical discussions of AI ethics and roboethics into technical design solutions acceptable to human users. My work addresses making concrete progress toward designing robots and AI systems that can navigate ethically sensitive contexts in a manner acceptable to human users. In this talk, I will describe my work on (1) disambiguating multidisciplinary theories to a level specific to the application context with ethical concerns, (2) considering the up-to-date discussions of human moral psychology during human-AI interaction or human-robot interaction, and (3) validating the efficacy of AI ethics and roboethics in a real-world environment. I will conclude by outlining how an interdisciplinary research approach enables building a sustainable ecosystem of a responsible technological future.

Jung-ha Ku | CEO at DESIGNCARE LAB

  • Title: A Strategic Planning Case of a National University Hospital with Service Design
    • Due to the geographical nature of a university hospital located in Daejeon, a large number of local patients are leaking to the metropolitan area. In order to find clues to solving these problems, the study was conducted on how to provide better healthcare services by finding the direction of public healthcare services centered on local users using service design methods. In this case, the hospital’s problems were identified, focusing on outpatient services, and the top 10 tasks and implementation plans that the hospital should carry out over the next 5 years were proposed.
