Statement

In recent years, computers powered by artificial intelligence (AI) have begun creating impressive images that resemble real art. These AI-generated pictures raise a big question: can machines be truly creative like humans? This study explores that question by comparing AI-created images to traditional photographs taken by humans, with a particular focus on emotional expression and storytelling. While AI excels at arranging visuals and capturing precise timing, it often falls short in conveying deep emotions or telling meaningful stories. To better understand this gap, the researchers employ the concept of the “decisive moment,” a well-known idea in photography that captures the essence of a scene in a single, powerful moment. By analyzing ten key elements of this decisive moment—such as emotion, timing, and composition—they measure how well AI performs. The study finds that while AI-generated images can appear beautiful, they often lack emotional depth. This work doesn’t try to prove whether AI is better or worse than human artists. Instead, it asks how we can utilize AI as a helpful tool to support human creativity, rather than replace it.

최근 몇 년 사이, 인공지능(AI) 기술을 활용한 컴퓨터가 마치 진짜 예술처럼 보이는 인상적인 이미지를 만들어내기 시작했습니다. 이러한 AI 생성 이미지들은 한 가지 중요한 질문을 제기합니다. 과연 기계도 인간처럼 진정한 창의력을 가질 수 있을까요? 이 연구는 그 질문을 탐구하며, 특히 감정 표현과 스토리텔링 측면에서 AI가 만든 이미지와 인간이 촬영한 전통적인 사진을 비교합니다. AI는 시각 요소를 정교하게 배열하고 정확한 타이밍을 포착하는 데 뛰어난 능력을 보이지만, 깊은 감정을 전달하거나 의미 있는 이야기를 담는 데에는 한계가 있습니다. 저자는 이러한 차이를 더 잘 이해하기 위해 사진의 유명한 개념인 ‘결정적 순간(decisive moment)’을 활용합니다. 이는 한 장의 사진으로 장면의 핵심을 포착하는 특별한 순간을 의미합니다. 연구에서는 감정, 타이밍, 구도 등 결정적 순간을 구성하는 10가지 요소를 기준으로 AI 이미지의 성과를 분석했습니다. 그 결과, AI가 만든 이미지는 겉보기엔 아름다울 수 있지만, 감정적으로는 평면적이고 깊이가 부족하다는 평가를 받았습니다. 이 연구는 AI가 인간보다 낫거나 못함을 증명하는 데 초점을 두지 않습니다. 오히려 인간의 창의성을 대체하지 않고, 그 창의성을 돕는 유용한 도구로서 AI를 어떻게 활용할 수 있을지를 고민하는 데 목적이 있습니다.
