Statement
Even in the 2020s, the decline of local news outlets and the reduction in newsroom staff and capacity persist globally, causing ‘news deserts’ in local communities. This trend undermines citizens’ access to local news and weakens public discussion on local agendas. News Painters is a platform that enables citizens to create news from local stories they encounter in everyday life, helping them build the capacity to produce local news themselves and address the local news gap. On this platform, citizens report local stories they have witnessed or experienced, and AI generates news articles based on their reports. Other citizens can report additionally, and the article is continuously updated to reflect these contributions. This citizen-AI co-creation allows individuals to publicize hyperlocal issues, and collective reporting embraces diverse perspectives, enabling citizen-led journalism to serve as a local public forum. The news credibility of News Painters is ensured through report filtering, fact-checking, and final review by local media journalists. Each report is given a unique color, symbolizing the act of painting one’s local story onto the canvas of the local community.
2020년대에 접어든 지금도 전 세계적으로 지역 언론의 쇠퇴와 뉴스룸 인력 및 역량의 감소가 계속되고 있으며, 그 결과 많은 지역 사회에서 ‘뉴스 사막(news desert)’ 현상이 나타나고 있습니다. 이러한 흐름은 시민들의 지역 뉴스 접근성을 약화시키고, 지역 의제를 둘러싼 공적 논의를 위축시킵니다. News Painters는 시민들이 일상에서 마주하는 지역 이야기를 바탕으로 뉴스를 직접 만들어갈 수 있도록 지원하는 플랫폼으로, 시민 스스로 지역 뉴스를 생산할 수 있는 역량을 키우고 지역 뉴스 공백을 해소하는 것을 목표로 합니다. 이 플랫폼에서 시민들은 자신이 목격하거나 경험한 지역 이야기를 제보하고, AI는 이를 바탕으로 뉴스 기사를 생성합니다. 다른 시민들도 추가 제보에 참여할 수 있으며, 기사는 이러한 기여를 반영해 지속적으로 업데이트됩니다. 이러한 시민–AI 공동 창작 방식은 개인이 초지역적(hyperlocal) 이슈를 공론화할 수 있게 하고, 집단적 제보를 통해 다양한 관점을 포용함으로써 시민 주도의 저널리즘이 지역 공론장의 역할을 수행하도록 돕습니다. News Painters의 뉴스 신뢰도는 제보 필터링, 사실 검증, 그리고 지역 언론 기자의 최종 검토 과정을 통해 확보됩니다. 각 제보에는 고유한 색상이 부여되며, 이는 각자의 지역 이야기를 지역 공동체라는 캔버스 위에 ‘그려 넣는’ 행위를 상징합니다.
