8-day-long exploration and discovery with a hint of cultural exchange and friendship-building joined by students and professors with diverse backgrounds from leading design schools from around Asia

In a nutshell

• Date 27 Jul – 3 August 2023
• Place Toyosu Campus, Shibaura Institute of Technology and elsewhere in Tokyo, Japan
• Eligibility All UNIST students enrolled in Design Department and doctoral students that are supervised by UNIST Design faculty as their main study advisor
• To be selected Fifteen students across all levels – bachelors, masters and doctoral
• Financial Support 60,000 or 80,000 JPY ^{1, 2, 3}

1. Depending on your GPA due to the criteria provided by the Japanese government – 60,000 JPY for students with GPA of lower than 2.3 in the scale of 3.0 and 80,000 JPY for students with GPA of 2.3 or higher. More information in the required document below.
2. Selected students will book their tickets and accommodations themselves independently and will receive the above amount upon arrival.
3. Please note that students with Japanese nationality are NOT eligible, as the financial support come from the Japanese government’s program to foster cultural exchange between Japanese students and those from different culture than Japan.

The brief: Redesign Bad Design

During the eight-day workshop, the participating students as teams will discover bad designs on the streets of Tokyo. Each team will purchase the bad design with a maximum budget of 10,000 yen and transform it into an attractive and fantastic design.

3. Merge the two above into a PDF under your student number: e.g., 140526.pdf

Selection process & schedule

1. The selection committee consists of more than three UNIST Design professors
2. The motivation letter (1–5, 5 being highest) and your GPA will equally be weighted
3. The representation of all study levels will also be considered (i.e., the selection committee will ensure that students from bachelors, masters, and doctoral level are all moderately represented in the cohort)
4. The 15 students that are finally selected will be informed by Friday 19 of May 23:55 at the latest
